A Message from Diocesan Treasurer, Ian Robertson
This website is designed to provide a resource for many of the human resource (HR) questions you may have, whether in the parish or at the synod level. It has been under development for a long time and continues that way today.
In 2002 the Diocesan Council of the synod authorized the creation of a Human Resource Task Force to examine a number of HR issues and to present policies to deal with those issues. It reported out in 2005, and in 2007 the Human Resource Implementation Task Force was mandated by diocesan council with carrying out the recommendations of the earlier task force. This website is one of the results from that task force.
The insightful and creative use of human resources is vital to carrying out our ministry in the world. We aren’t effective in proclaiming the gospel if the people given the charge are weak, poorly organized, inadequately motivated or supervised. Hence we need good management of people in our charge.
This website is in development – now and for a time into the future. We start where we must start - ensuring that people new to parish life and tasks are properly briefed screened and trained. Then we will proceed with how to relate to each other, how to review the efforts being spent, and finally how to disengage and look for a new challenges.
Screening: This word has been taken to apply to the tasks done at the commencement of a person’s activity. It encompasses providing a position description, interviewing the candidate to ensure there is a match between skills and need, conducting a reference check and background check where/when appropriate and then setting that person on to accomplishing the task. Much of the information being used here is being adapted from a similar procedure in use by the Diocese of Toronto, who have kindly allowed us to use and adapt their material. Over time, as more apply this in their parishes more adaptation to our local conditions will take place.
Supervision: to be developed
Behavoural Expectations: Under development. (please contact the office 604.684.6306 ext. 228 to consult the Policy Manual, Appendix G2. The manual is not currently available for posting on this site).
